Guest Writer JD Byrne

JD Byrne started practicing law in West Virginia more than 20 years ago. It wasn’t too long after that he decided he needed some chances to make up the story for once, to make it come out the way it should, or he’d go mad. He started writing short fiction, mostly science fiction with a little bit a fantasy thrown in, before he discovered National Novel Writing Month in 2007 and took a shot at writing longer stuff. Over several years, and more than a few false starts, he published his first novel, Moore Hollow in 2015. It’s a story of family secrets, political corruption, and zombies – but not the kind people usually think of.

In 2016, he released The Water Road, the first volume of the trilogy of the same name, to be followed by The Endless Hills (2016) and The Bay of Sins (2017). The trilogy is a story of explosive secrets revealed and the attempts by the woman who found them to keep them from consuming her world in a blaze of revenge.

In 2019, he released Gods of the Empire, the first volume of the Unari Empire trilogy, about a steampunk work whose single superpower is starting to show cracks. The two main characters navigate the shifting world while digging deep for secrets that others wish would remain hidden. Widows of the Empire (2021) continues the saga, while Heroes of the Empire will bring it all to a startling conclusion early in 2023.

Many of Byrne’s shorter works can be found on his website or in publications like Aether & Ichor and the Flash Fiction Podcast. His latest story, “The Consequences of Sin,” was part of The Dancing Plague: A Collection of Utter Speculation, released in the fall of 2022 by Speculation Publications.

Guest Painter and Streamer JP Gotrokkits

JP Gotrokkits started painting around 1989, his first figures were from RAFM, Grenadier, and a little company called Ral Partha.  Soon Citadel miniatures appeared at his local shop and took the spotlight.  He has painted figures ranging in subjects from Science Fiction, Fantasy and History, in most of the popular scales, and from most of the popular companies, between 6mm to 32mm.  As he matured in the hobby, he met with Sea Dog Game Studios and built terrain and painted miniatures for their Sailpower and TechCommander game lines.  Sometimes things come full circle and a few years ago he came into contact with Ral Partha Legacy, who have re-released many of the figures that enthralled him in his youth, which gave him the privilege to paint several units for their studio armies and online catalogue.

Of late he has been operating a Twitch channel twice a week where he paints both commissions and pieces from his Pile Of Opportunity.  He started the channel in hopes of being an encouraging voice in the hobby for both new painters and old vets.

If you’ve never painted a figure before, he invites you to make a little time to stop by and paint a figure at DualCon’s Paint & Take event, it can be your first step into a rewarding part of the gaming hobby at large.  The first one is free!

Guest Streamer Board Game House

Board Game House all started as three friends living in a duplex, Stephen lived upstairs and Megan and Derek lived downstairs.
In 2018, the three of us took a trip to Gen Con with two intentions, see Critical Role live and hang out with a few online friends in real life. Gen Con by and large was a secondary part of that. That weekend changed us, our views of the hobby, and the impact and importance of board games on us forever. Gen Con lives up to its tag line of, “The best 4 days in gaming.” If you have never been, go!

It was on the drive home that the conversation started about sharing our love of the hobby with the world. We knew that Twitch could be used for more than just video games from Critical Role and Geek & Sundry, but we noticed that even though there were some great channels, there wasn’t a huge board game presence. We are lucky enough now to have become friends with most of those streamers. So we decided Twitch was where we were going to make our mark and thus, Board Game House was born.

Our first official stream was October 15, 2018 (there was one attempt before that but we don’t talk about that).

At the beginning, we thought doing the stream was all about the games we played. We learned very quickly that that was not the case. People came for the games and stayed for the atmosphere that we are able to create but more importantly our community, the Neighborhood. The support and love that our amazing community exudes is beyond words. We would not have the motivation to keep going or frankly anything to even operate a stream without them. We love the Neighborhood and the foundation of this community are our amazing Mods and loyal neighbors. They are the best out there.

If you love board games and want to be part of an amazing, open, supportive, caring, generous community come join us. We play board games on the internet for YOU!

Tons of plot-relevant random encounters with creatures players have never met offer a challenge for even veteran players of 5th Edition! Can you escape the island of Landt?

Welcome to Arthos!

Guest Game Creator Bryan Larch

Bryan Larch, a lifelong resident of West Virginia that recently re-discovered the joy and excitement of playing Dungeons & Dragons. For the past few years, ever since his sons asked him to teach them to play D&D, he has been writing old-school, 1e AD&D, home-brewed adventures. He has had the pleasure to DM all of them with many great and wonderful players that love the game as much as him. On several occasions, a few of those players suggested he publish their adventures so others can run them as well. He was reluctant at first but then decided to give it a shot after he was given the opportunity to submit an adventure for Flipping & Turning magazine published by Smoldering Dung Games. He then realized, with some effort on his part and some teamwork, it may be possible for him to be able to pull together the resources needed to produce an adventure module.

On the Edge of Wilderland” is the result of those efforts. This module has been designed to be played with the AD&D ruleset. It contains three inter-related adventures for PCs ranging in levels 2nd-4th. Each adventure can be played as a “one-shot”. Or play all three of them (in any order) in an attempt to survive the entire module. Either way, the DM and players will enjoy this old-school style adventure module. Each of the adventures have detailed maps and a random encounter chart. Also, there is a chart listing several of the important NPCs the characters may meet during their stay at the Twin Fort, an impressive military outpost. In addition, there are eight pre-generated characters from which the players can choose if need be.

Guest Writer John Russo

With twenty books published internationally and nineteen feature movies in worldwide distribution, John Russo has been called a “living legend.” He began by co-authoring the screenplay for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, which has become recognized as a “horror classic.”

His books on the art and craft of movie making, such as HOW TO MAKE EXCITING MONEY MAKING MOVIES,  have become bibles of independent production. Quentin Tarantino and many other noted filmmakers have stated that Russo’s books helped them launch their careers.

John Russo wants people to know he’s “just a nice guy who likes to scare people” — and he’s done it with novels and films such as RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, MIDNIGHT, THE MAJORETTES, THE AWAKENING and HEARTSTOPPER. He has had a long, rewarding career, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Recently his screenplay for ESCAPE OF THE LIVING DEAD was made into a five-part comic book released by Avatar to great acclaim; it made the Top Ten of Horror Comics nationally and spawned two graphic novels and ten sequels.

Russo’s latest novel DEALEY PLAZA was published by Burning Bulb Publishing, which has also published Russo’s novels THE ACADEMY, THE AWAKENING, THE BOOBY HATCH, LIMB TO LIMB, LIVING THINGS and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. His short story Channel 666 appears in THE BIG BOOK OF BIZARRO and John was a contributing editor on the Burning Bulb hit anthology RISE OF THE DEAD.

He is also slated to direct two movies: a remake of his cult hit, MIDNIGHT, and a brand new take on the “zombie phenomenon” entitled SPAWN OF THE DEAD.

His popularity among genre fans remains at a high pitch. He appears at many movie conventions each year as a featured guest, and he considers his appearance at the Orion Festival, hosted by Kirk Hammett and METALLICA, one of the highlights of his career.
